Anyone for tennis? Queue here
We took the issue of the AELTC expansion to the heart of Wimbledon - its famed queue - on the last day of the tournament.
With three games of Swingball and a customised scoreboard (see pic), we discussed the club’s building plans with both locals and visitors as they queued up to get in the gates.
The expansion remains on hold and is still under review by Wandsworth and Merton Councils. Campaigners have highlighted the implications of a recent Supreme Court decision for this public green space and are pushing for Merton Council and AELTC to uphold the covenant they both signed in 1993 to keep this land for leisure or recreational purposes.
We believe the multiple protections of this land and legal covenant must be honoured - and the AELTC needs to recognise that reality.
The current plans are excessive - Wimbledon doesn’t need an extra 38 courts, and the development would cause huge environmental damage.
