Statement in response to Southport tragedy and subsequent rioting

Vigil for Southport victims

The Liberal Democrat Party is appalled by the horrifying attack that took three innocent lives in Southport last week. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Southport and especially the families of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice Dasilva Aguiar as they come to terms with this terrible tragedy.

It is remarkable how the Southport community has come together to grieve and support each other in the wake of this awful loss. This response of love and compassion − not riots fuelled by hatred and misinformation − shows the true nature of our nation.

We join the Prime Minister in condemning the extremists who have exploited this tragedy to spread violence and hate.

Targeting Muslims, asylum seekers and people of colour is unacceptable. It must be stopped and those responsible must face the full force of the law. We stand in solidarity with the communities who are being targeted.

Thank you to the police officers, emergency services, public officials and representatives across the political spectrum who have shown courage and leadership in their response to the horrific attacks and the unwarranted violence that has followed.
