Judith Trounson
Tooting general election candidate
Judith is standing for Tooting in the general election to be held on 4 July.
Who am I?
I am a Polish born Londoner. I moved to London 28 years ago to study. I graduated in Maths in 2000 and have been living and working in London ever since. I work as an IT consultant and dedicate a lot of my free time to causes that are important to me. I am a member of the board of my local residents association and every Saturday I volunteer at a local foodbank. Just recently I have been invited to join the Board of Trustees of the Doorstep Homeless Families Project in North London. Bringing an end to extreme poverty and homelessness is something I care about very much and I believe it’s is achievable within a single Parliament term as long as fair and progressive policies are implemented.
Having older family members has made me aware of the importance of good quality health and social care and the critical role of carers in our society.
Everyday family, friends and voters remind me of the pressures children and young people are under. I will campaign for better child mental health services, demand extra support to ensure school attendance, and fight to protect kids from the effects of knife crime and street gangs.
Judith's key priorities
NHS
Getting an appointment with a GP or an NHS dentist when needed has become impossible for most of us. Even emergency appointments take more than 24 hours. Life saving cancer treatment very often does not reach patients in time. We need more than a few good doctors and dentists, we need a lot more of them.
Liberal Democrats have a solid and realistic plan to increase the numbers of GPs and surgeries and give everyone the right to see a GP when needed, improve access to mental health, especially for young people and reform NHS dentistry so that free dental healthcare is available to everyone.
Europe and the Economy
As a proud European I am determined to keep the task of improving our relationship with the EU. Britain needs to be where it belongs, among leaders of European nations, collaborating, creating new opportunities for business, trade and prosperity and ensuring everyone in the UK has at least the same standard of living as our European neighbours.
The new Parliament will offer the opportunity to finally honestly assess the damage of Brexit and take real steps towards fixing our relationship with the EU, paving the way to mutually beneficial trade deals, co-operation with EU agencies and science programs, and when the opportunity arises, re-joining the Single Market.
Environment and water quality
The sewage scandal is one of the worst public scandals of recent times. The fact that water companies have been able to get away with pumping raw sewage into our rivers while making record profits and paying out record dividends, without so much as a thought about investment into better water quality is unforgivable.
Liberal Democrats have a clear plan of transforming water companies into public benefit companies, prioritizing investment into water quality before company bonuses and replacing ineffective Ofwat with an independent, tough regulator with new powers to prevent sewage dumps.
Liberal Democrats will lead UK to invest in renewable power so that 80% of UK electricity is generated form renewables by 2030, provide free retrofits for low income households and incentives for all households to improve energy consumption, reduce reliance on gas and end fuel poverty.
Cost of living and housing
We, the Liberal Democrats, believe that every person has the right to lead the best life they can, to have a job with fair pay, a comfortable and affordable home, good healthcare, and the opportunity to grow and develop. We want to create sustainable opportunities for the next generation.
The cost of living crisis inflicted on our country by the Tory government, caused to a large degree by the self harm of Brexit, must be fixed long term. Not just by immediate financial help with energy bills, but by creating a lasting policy that is designed to provide medium and long term paths to prosperity.
Liberal Democrats will help people insulate homes so they are cheaper to heat, will tackle the food prices and get mortgage rates under control. We will make taxes fair so that a disproportionate burden doesn’t fall on low earners and that big corporations are taxed fairly. We will help and empower local businesses so that they, in turn, will create new jobs and help the economy grow. We will invest in community led development of cities and towns and ensure that with every new development there is appropriate infrastructure and services to ensure those new communities can prosper. We will also regulate the rental market and make it fair.
